Help me understand lenses :-) Macro v Telephoto in macro mode

OK...this came up as part of another thread I'm involved in...but I really want to know so thought I'd post it separately.

If I am shooting macro shots at 180mm with a TELEPHOTO lens how would shooting with a 180mm MACRO lens be different (assuming the f is 2.8 on both). Would it be different? How so? and more importantly..why? If I owned the true macro I could compare...but since I do not...relying on y'all
