Radio Poppers, Alien Bees, Sony & a converter!
Sep 18, 2009

Hey folks. Today, I received my two flash hot shoe adapter. Yesterday, I received my Radio Poppers JrX studio kit. This evening, I put it all together, connected it to my 3 year old Alien Bees AB400 (great strobes, just keep on poppin). Alas!!! I now have a RELIABLE radio trigger system, and better yet, I can control my lighting ratios from the camera. I haven't used this combo for an actual shoot yet, but I will in the coming weeks. I can't wait!
Just to put it all in the initial post, here is what I've got:

A few comments about the above equipment:

The hot shoe adapters look great. Quality product, actually pretty heavy for their size, so there must be something of value in there. My old one was a cheap piece of junk. I checked to make sure they are both functioning, 2 for 2. At this point, highly recommended, especially for the price!

The radio poppers JrX system is very nice. I wonder how compact it could have been if they chose a different battery type, but it's still very compact, and definitely a high quality product. The system seems to do everything that is advertised, at least for what I wanted it to do. 3 separate channels with analog control over the output of any of Paul C Buff strobe (White Lightning, Zeus, Alien Bees).

My 2 AB400 strobes have handled many shoots. They rock. I had to send one of them in to have the cooling fan replaced as it got a bit loud, but other than that, great service, and have earned their keep over 3+ years. I wouldn't hesitate to add more Alien Bees to my line-up when the need arises. Their large octobox is also a great product...easy enough to assemble/disassemble, and great light shaping for portraits.

I took a few pictures of the kit this evening, but it's time for bed, so I'm not posting them yet. I'll get them here in the next day or two for those of you who are interested. I mostly just wanted to post and let everyone know that this could be a really great system. I'm still holding hope that RPs will release a native Sony mount version, but the adapter+RP is a secure and firm connection to the camera, so I'm not overly concerned.

If anyone has any questions, let them fly, and I'll do my best to keep up with them.
