Lee filters Grad ND - inaccurate strength problem??
Sep 14, 2009

I am sure there are a lot of Lee filters users in this forum. So I post the question here.

I own a few of Lee Grad ND filters. They are soft ones: 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and hard ones: 0.6 and 0.9. I did a test today to see if the ND is as strong as it claimed. The results, however, really confused me. Basically ALL filters are 1/3 stop less than they claim.

My setup was using a spot metering on my 1Ds3 manual mode. Set an exposure on a white area of my computer screen. Then drag my filters through the holder in front of lens. For the 0.9 one, I can see the darkest area is 2 2/3 stops than the colorless area. Should it be 3 stops?!

I also own a 0.9 regular ND (not graduate). It shows correct strength: 3 stops exactly.

I also have 1.2 Hitech hard and soft grad ND filters. They are exact 4 stops.

It is quite disappointed, as Lee filters are so expensive. Can anybody reproduce my test results?

Thanks.
