a lens for shooting people (and maybe landscapes)
Sep 5, 2009

I recently got a Canon 500D/T1i. The kit lens (18-55mm) is ok, but I'd really like a lens for indoor shots of people (low light performance), and decent landscape shots. Do you think the 50mm prime lenses fit this bill? I don't think I'll be doing much zooming, and I think I'm going to be shooting mostly at the 55mm range anyways. I really like close up people shots.

Do you have recommendations for which lens? I was thinking either:

1. Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM
2. Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II
3. Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM

I also noticed that none of the prime lenses have IS or shake compensation. Is that typical?

Thank you.

PS: Or...will a 55-250mm lens (like the EF-S 55-250mm) be a good fit here too? Does a prime lens have better low light performance than a zoom lens if I'm always using the zoom at the 55mm setting?

I know, I'm all over the place.
