I doubt the 1d4 will be full frame.

For sports, there is a definite advantage of a narrower field of view (1.3x crop) for focus accuracy. By contrast, taking a shot with a full frame body with same lens gives a wider field of view and makes focus accuracy in fast moving sports more difficult, invariably resulting in fewer keepers. What you want in sports is a close up view rather than cropping a wide shot and hoping you got it. You also need the fastest possible reaction for autofocus, which is further hindered by the need to buffer larger files from a full frame sensor, not to mention frame rate.

There is clearly a market for both full frame and cropped sensor models. People cannot expect one size to fit all while denying that combining the two would make compromises necessary.

Canon has up until now produced different bodies designed to best suit different applications, and there is no reason to change this. In addition to that, thinning the product line would result in a loss of sales and profit. Who, in any company would advocate such an action?

Also, the theory that Canon would merge 1.3x and FF to one body is based on what is probably a misunderstanding from an early interview with a top Canon official, that I believe he himself has since said was a misunderstanding. He never intended to imply that Canon would merge the two into one - yet that is a misunderstanding that is still propagated in these forums. But don't take my word for it..... Someone recently asked Chuck Westfall about his, and Chuck gave his personal explanation in his "tech tips" colum over at The Digital Journalist. You can read Chuck's remarks about that question here (6th question in the article) and decide for yourself: http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue0612/tech-tips.html

People who believe that their particular tool of choice must be right for every other photographer and every other use, are probably naive', imho.
