Ever heard of AOL?

They use what were once called "Tandem" fault tolerant computers as the front end to their email system. These are MIPS based. Thay have absolutley loads of these boxes (BIG multi processor systems).

Tandem were bought a while back by Compaq and now of course are owned by HP.

Which is quite funny because the founders of Tandem left HP in the late 70's because they were not interested in their ideas.

Other applications I know that run on Tandem's are the UK national cash network (LINK - the company I work for supplies the software), and there are various other famous names in the US such as Visa and Bank One (another customer of ours) that use "Tandem" Mips based processors.

What has this got to do with the thread? Not much but I just thought you might like to know

Dave (UK based Tandem techie)
