Focus failure on D300

My D300 fails to focus. When I half-hold the shutter button, the lens travels through its focus range but never locks focus. This happens with the two lenses I've tried so far (18-200 and 17-55), so the problem appears to be in the body and not the lens.

What should I check before calling Nikon?

Have others seen this problem?
