The Nikon 70-300VR is still not in the same ballpark as the Canon 70-200IS.

The Canon 70-200 f/4L is an professional standard 'L' lens. It's constant f/4. It's weather sealed. The Nikon is a consumer grade lens; it goes longer, but it is f/5.6

Obv the Nikon 70-300 is cheaper, but that's because it is a consumer lens, not a professional lens.

I know that, and mentioned as much (costs less, not pro build, stated the aperture range). But the Canon doesn't fit on Nikon bodies hence the reason why I'm suggesting that he not dismiss the 70-300VR without giving it a try, first.
