I thought third party batteries didn't work for the G1?

That's been my experience. For my Nikon and Canon dslrs at the time, I typically spent between 8-14 dollars for an extra battery and usually bought them from the same seller on Ebay. That is a huge chunk of money saved over the years that camera manufacturers didn't get from me. As for the firmware upgrade, I guess I got lucky and glad I didn't know about it.

Correct, that reason being so that they can sell you a battery for 5 times the price. They could care less if your camera burns up due to a 3rd party battery, it's just more business for them!

I've used third party batteries for years on multiple cameras and have never had a problem with them. In fact many have been better then the OEM batteries.
