14-bit vs. 8-bit...

I have ignored tis question for far too long. I currently own a Canon 50D, shoot in RAW and I use Photoshop Elements 6.0 for post processing my files.

I understand that a 14-bit file gives greater tonal graduations to an image than 8-bit does. What I do not understand is how to make the best use of it.

When I open up a RAW file in Camera RAW it gives me the option to select a 14-bit image or an 8-bit one. If I select the 14-bit image and then open it in Photoshop Elements not all the tools are at my disposal...why? Is it a restriction placed by Elements or is it just the way a 14-bit file works?

Is there a way to fully work with a 14-bit image?

Greatly confussed...
