No 60D, no surprise

A number of people on this forum seemed surprised that no 60D was announced today. But there never was any real reason to think it would be, other than speculation fueled by rumours. If you look at the release dates for the previous xxD cameras (or for that matter, the release dates for the Rebel series), you will see that Canon generally releases the new cameras approximately every 18 months, not every 12. The release of the 50D only 12 months after 40D was an exception. Given the ensuing hot and furious debate about the merits of the camera, it might be argued that Canon rushed this camera to market too soon (possibly because of the Nikon D90's release).

It's entirely possible that the 60D will come out this month, but next February would seem just as likely. In the meantime, I'm sure that we all sincerely hope that Canon will continue to improve the 50D through updated firmware releases.
