frustrated advanced amateur looking for lens suggestions
Aug 18, 2009

I'm a dedicated Nikon user looking for suggestions on an lens upgrade path. I've been using Nikon equipment for 20 years but only switched to digital early last year. I'm frustrated by my lens upgrade options - it doesn't feel like Nikon has reasonably priced lenses for advanced amateurs. When I look on the Canon side I see lenses like the 10-22, 17-40, and 70-200 f/4 priced around $700 with nice build quality (less so the 10-22). On the Nikon side I see the overpriced 10-24, 16-85, and 70-300 which have lower build quality than my consumer grade 28-85 AF and 70-120 AF bought for $300 each in 1990. The recent price increases have placed higher quality lenses like the 80-200 and 17-55 out of my reach. I'm using a D40x and Nikon's changes to the F mount limit the lenses I can use.

Today I own the following:

Rarely used:
28-85 AF
70-210 AF
50 1.8 AF
85 1.8 AF

I mostly shoot landscapes and travel images. Can anyone suggest a lens upgrade path that keeps me with Nikon brand lenses and will increase image quality?
