500D on 17-55?

I'm planning on getting a 500D, primarily for use on my 70-200 f/4 IS, for which the 72 mm diameter would suffice. But the 77 mm version would also allow it to be used on the 17-55. I'm aware that the 500D is optimized for longer focal lengths, but what would be the effect of using it with the 17-55, particuarly at 55 mm? Would the image quality be so poor as to essentially render it pointless?
