Please help a novice...

Just bought a Canon 50D and now I need a lens for it. I have read this forum for the last few days and am more confused than ever! I know very little about photography but want to learn as I use the camera more often. The purpose of this camera is to take pictures of my family and friends. Eventually I will want to take pictures of the kids playing sports, etc...
With that said, which lens should I consider?
