Dear All,

I love Nikon, don't get me wrong. It was my first intro to DSLRs 4 years ago, and have been a staunch advocate since. However, it's about time I upgraded my body, have old D50 and I'm toying with going to the D300. However, that's a £1100 investment right now. The used value of my current body, 6 lenses and speedlight line up is about £1300.

That would put £2400 in my pocket if I didn't buy the D300. With it, and here's the bit you all slate me (and I deserve it, i should wash my mouth out with soap for even mentioning it) I could buy (all new) ....

Canon 40D (£550)
70-200/4 L USM (£500)
17-55/2.8 IS USM (£750)
50/1.4 USM (£250)
Canon Speedlite 430EX II (£200)

All for less money that buying a D300 upgrade.

Now obviously, I lose ...

1. Use of a second body as a back up
2. f/2.8 between 100-200
3. Wide angle between 10-17 (but I don't shoot that wide much anyway)

4. 40D isn't a D300, but then it's got the spec I believe I need, which is better than the D50 with improved ISO, improved AF (specifically cross type) and frames per second.

However, I gain....

1. f1.4 @ 50mm
2. Better flash
3. USM across the range
4. f/2.8 and stabalisation between 17-55

I suppose it's getting the body at half the cost of the D300 that is soooo tempting, leaving me cash to invest else where.

I think I'll still plough on with the D300 as I love the Nikon interface and system ( and the community is really good), but it's very temptiing!

Cheers

Bruce
