speedlite 430 ex or 580 ex II?

I own a canon eos 450d, and have a good portrait lens, but I seem to need an extern flash, and I have saved some money. I can afford a canon speedlite 580 exII, but it is a lot bigger than 430 ex, so I am thinking - do I really need 580, or should I just settle with 430 ex to start with? I most enjoy taking portraits, both indoors and outdoors, and I am planning on putting some of my photos on istockphoto, but I just dont know which flashgun to buy.
