D90 PP Help please

Hi!
So i bought my D90 2 days ago and i need some guidance with processing. I know the composition and subject are a tad boring, however, just practicing so bare with me. In processing how do you give the colours a little more punch (the lighting was very harsh). I use GIMP and iphoto for processing. Also, the exif for the shot is f/8, 1/320, ISO 200 if you can give me some suggestions there.
Hopefully this embeds, i know how people hate to click through!
