Tell mne all about the 1000D, why I should get one?

This is not a simple request.
I have the following cameras
Canon 10D
Canon 40D
Panasonic LX3
Panasonic FZ8 (the wife's camera)

I bought the LX3 for small gatherings etc. So far I am very disappointed with it even after 2 software upgrades. Been a bit spoilt with a 10D then 40D.

I am now looking for a better P&S type camera and the 1000D looks about the right size.

Fitted with an EF-S 18-200mm or a EF 24-85 and an Speedlite 430 EX or just the onboard flash, while bigger than an LX3, not much bigger than a FZ8.

Right decision?
