Robert's at Indy Airshow

Roberts Imaging had a tent at the Indy Airshow with various factory reps including Nikon.

They had the full range of Nikon cameras and lenses to try out. I shot with the D700, the D3X, and the 200-400 lens. The sky was hazy and the light was harsh. What I learned was that quality of light is way more important than quality of equipment.

Also, good technique trumped top of the line technology.

There was plenty of light so the D700 didn't seem to add any advantage, in fact the loss of the crop factor was noticed.

The D3X offered no huge improvement unless you wanted to crop in, then it was amazing what detail you would find.

The 200-400 really works best with a tripod and it is hard to track stuff with such a huge lens. The optics were great though and it was a real treat.

In the end I ended up quite content with my more modest equipment, at least for airshow stuff.
