14-24, first impressions. Sample night photo
Jun 17, 2009

I finally have the 14-24 that I mainly bought for night landscape photos with my D700.

At 2.8 the optical quality is amazing for a 14mm, even if it wasn't a zoom. Fully opened, it is much better than all my short focal distance primes: 20 AIS (manual focus) 2.8, 24 AIS 2.8, 28 AIS 2.8, 50 AIS 1.4 and F2, 35 AFD F2.

There is no comma aberration at 2.8 !

Still have to test it in daylight landscape conditions where I will shot at F11-F16. I guess that in these conditions the difference with the primes will be less. So my 14-24 will have a nocturnal life.

But it is really heavy and large, a very annoying lens to carry arround. Suddenly, my D300 with 105 micro VR plus the SBR200 flashes seem small !

Also, as all you probably know, there is no option for a filter. This is a serious problem as all my photos are in outdoor environment, in dusty places or near the water.

This is a light worm near a field. At the background, a 1000 years old chapel
