I have one of those Adorama podmatic ones seen at http://www.adorama.com/TPP.html . Seems convenient, and collapses to 14", so it can be strapped to the tripod straps of my camera bag without sticking out on the ends further than the width of the bag. Most are much taller when collapsed.

It's a clever design to be able to pop it open and it's ready without twisting any screws or latches or such. That was the feature that sold me, and it does seem to do that as advertised.

To be honest though, I've never used it much, so I can't say whether I recommend it or not. The one or two times I used it in a stadium for a graduation, it seemed to work fine. My only complaint would be that you have to open it slowly, because it's "one way" when opening -- you can't reduce the height back down a tad if you pass the height you're after. In other words, if you go too far, you have to collapse it back fully and reopen it to get to the height you were going for.

I keep coming to all of you for help and you haven't disappointed me,
yet.

I have purchased an A700 (which is terrific) and a SAL 70-300G lens
(about 4 lbs total). I will probably need a monopod to help with
stabilization. I do have a Sony tripod, and a short Velbon tripod.
I will be going to Alaska in a couple of months and will be doing
some "excursions" and I think a tripod would be too complicated to
set up to try to get a quick shot of a whale tail (fluke) or a bear.

I'm thinking a monopod would be more in order here. I would like one
that collapses to about 15 - 20" (do they go that small?). I am
planning to spend around $100 - $200. What type would you recommend?
