Lens Systems - Why so many Lenses

I've been shopping to replace my point and shoot (with manual controls) to move up to something a little more flexible. I've been looking at lense offerings from various places and it seems there are piles of lenses for each system that cover similar fields of view and speeds but many overlap.

Why doesn't someone bring out a nice simple system of 2x zoom lenses that cover a wide range in a nice simple 15-30, 30-60, 60-120, and 120-240, plus a couple of dedicated fast primes at the various common lengths. Wouldn't the lenses in this setup be much smaller, or faster, and easier to manage than having a 15-85 and a 55-250 and a 30-125 all at different speeds?*

Maybe I'm just missing something too, since I'm still mostly a point and shooter.

Numbers were made up on the spot, and are not reflective of an actual system, more just to make the point.
