What can affect bokeh?

I did some outdoor shooting yesterday and had about 5 pictures that had disasterous bokeh in them. I saw a thread on here a while back about a filter affecting some guy's boken in 100-400 images on an africa trip. I had a polarizer on for a lot of the day, i dont honestly remember if i had it on for these shots.

I'm at work now but i'll post these tonight to see. This was on a 70-200 IS 2.8.

It was just these particular shots.

I'm thinking:

Filter
Distance to subject
Stabiliser

Truly no idea. But the pics are hard to look at even. Subject is sharp and focused, but trees behind are terrible. And only for a few shots.

Thanks for any insight
