D90 Mirror lock up = sharper images!

On my D90 I noticed that taking pictures with the exposure delay mode turned on makes a huge difference in the image sharpness with some lenses.

The difference is not so great using the 50mm or 85mm primes, but with my Tokina 12-24 the difference is clearly visible with handheld shots and tripod/remote release shots as well.

I was about to sell the Tokina I was so dissapointed with the image quality, but then I tried this and I couldn't believe the difference in image quality.

Is this normal? Can the mirror cause that much camera shake? Has anyone else experienced similar behaviour?
