Macro lenses for D40?

My brother's company needs a macro lens for their D40, and I'm not sure what to recommend.

The requirements are:

• It needs to be able to take pics of tiny pieces of microchips (not as small as a bug's head, but smaller than a penny) from 1-12 inches away

• The pics need to look good (maybe not divine, but presentable - cheaper lenses would be a plus)

• The camera will be a D40 (no built-in autofocus motor, though manual focus shouldn't be much of an issue)

• Might need a ring-flash

Any recommendations?
