I Had a Grey Market Lens Repaired by Nikon
In reply to walfy, May 15, 2009

I damaged a US 300 2.8 VR that had a 1.4 teleconverter attached to it at the time of the accident. The teleconverter was grey market from B and H. Because the teleconverter was jammed onto the 300mm and could not be removed by me, I sent both lenses to Nikon. They repaired the teleconverter (for a repair fee of course) and have returned it to me in perfect working order. Strangely enough, the 300mm is only being worked on now, two months later, because replacement parts for such a lens are not as available as those for a less expensive and more widely used lens such as an 18-200 or for that matter, a 1.4 teleconverter.

Unfortunately you cannot jam a U.S. teleconverter onto a 17-35 so my solution will not work for you, but perhaps you can derive some solace from my story (although I doubt that will be the case).

Good luck
