The multi-aspect ratio camera is coming!
May 3, 2009

With the Panasonic GH1 we see the first step towards the multi-aspect ratio camera, that takes full advantage of the image circle, with all aspect ratios between 16:9 and 1:1, in both landscape and portrait orientation, without rotating the camera.

The Panasonic GH1 has a sensor with 4352 x 3000 active pixels (13,06 mp), and you can choose between the following aspect ratios :

4:3 --- 4000 x 3000 = 12,00 mp
3:2 --- 4128 x 2752 = 11,36 mp
16:9 - 4352 x 2448 = 10,65 mp
1:1 ---- 2992 x2992 = 8,92 mp (just a crop from 4:3)

Now, if Panasonic with the GH2 (and hopefully all the other manufacturers too) take the step in full, and instead use a sensor with 4352 x 4352 pixels (18.94 mp, same pixel size), then we could choose between all the following aspect ratios (all same diagonal / image-circle) :

1:1 --- 3535 x 3535 = 12,50 mp
4:3 --- 4000 x 3000 = 12,00 mp
3:4 --- 3000 X 4000 = 12,00 mp
3:2 --- 4128 x 2752 = 11,36 mp
2:3 --- 2752 x 4128 = 11,36 mp
16:9 - 4352 x 2448 = 10,65 mp
9:16 - 2448 x 4352 = 10,65 mp

As it shows, the 1:1 aspect ratio now gives you the largest image size (12,5 mp), and 1:1 happens to be my prefered aspect ratio. but it's a win-win situation, whatever aspect ratio you might prefer, so lets hope that we'll see such a real multi-aspect ratio camera before long!
