A question on outdoor lighting with my D40

I was in Yellowstone last Fall and took a pic of the "Roosevelt Gate" at the northern entrance to the Park. It was mid afternoon and the sun was above and to the back of the Gate. The question is under these circumstances how can you lighten the darker areas in the gate that are shaded from the sun? Just learning with every shot here. Thanks
