which is better?

I am having some trouble in deciding which lens to purchase for 50D. I'm currently having the EFS17-85mm lens which isn't giving me very sharp images.

Which of the lens will give me better image quality on 50D?:
1) EFS17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
2) EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
