35 mm f1.8 question

So my 35mm lens arrived today, a day after I just sent in my d60 for replacement (hot pixel issue, fwiw.) so I have no way of testing the lens. I noticed that the foucus ring rotates freely with no stop, i can just twirl it all day in one direction. Is this something that's normal when a lens isn't mounted to a body? Thanks in advance for any help.
