D5000 tilt swivel display
Apr 14, 2009

I have long lamented the lack of tilt swivel live screens on DSLR's, up till now the preserve of 4/3.

SO I see the D5000 which not only has a tilt swivel display, but it seems they have put the hinge in the right place.

Then I read DPreviews opinion, which seems to think it is in the wrong place!

My main uses for the tilt swivel would be the following:

1) 90 degree display to give waist level viewfinder on tripods (and hand held sometimes), as works so well with MF cameras.

2) Shooting from low down or high up.

Seems to me that a bottom hinged unit is much better for this. Indeed I have used a friends S100FS and come to the conclusion that just a verticly tilting display would be better than a side hinged display (seems to me that having the display to the left would get in the way of your left hand!).

True, a bottom hinge does not allow you to use the camera like a contemporary video camera, but what do we primarily buy DSLR's for!
