Recent m4/3 micro news - good for Pany?
Apr 2, 2009

Recent m4/3 news has focused on the two upcoming Oly m4/3 models in July and December based on clippings from 43 rumors.com, while few have noticed that the same source indicated that a Pany m4/3 micro patterned after LX3 shape only slightly thicker would be out this fall or November. There has been quite a stir over in the other forum over the rumored price of the first Oly m4/3 being estimated $900-$950 with kit lens.

This may have left a real opening for Pany for its own micro entry. Even more puzzling was the announcement of the new Oly E 450 non-IS model in the very category which may be hit by the new micros? The projected high price for the Oly micro even suggests that the second model with an EVF and maybe articulating screen may be even higher and that Oly is targeting the high end users and trying to avoid hurting their 4/3rds models? Certainly Oly has greatly strenghened the 4/3 market with the excellent E620 entry. Thus we may see Pany initially producing the most affordable micros w/o body IS and Oly the higher end with in body IS. This may be good news for Pany, but not necessarily for the m4/3 format trying to establish itself as the new major player.

The above info on the m4/3 micro new models has been reported from several sources, but the timing of the Pany micro offering is less firm. In this day and age of leaks and rumors, seems strange that revolutionary models such as G1 or E620 and others could be sprung even before we heard what they actually looked like? Rumors and reported "fake pictures" of a Pany m4/3 micro surfaced as early as last Sept in dpreveiw posts, so I wouldn't be at all suprised if Pany has an early release up their sleeve, as every manufacture seems to want to keep the other guessing even to the point of no shows at the PMAs?

The Pany announcements of their new lens productions suggests that body only for some of their m4/3 models may soon be available to allow G1 buyers to get 14-140 as their std lens option. What is much less clear is what the extra std kit 14-45 lenses are meant for unless as an option for the new Pany m4/3 micro expected to have the 20/1.7 lens as standard. It is also possible that Pany may be supplying the same 20/1.7 as the kit lens for the Oly offering while Oly is producing m4/3 versions of their existing 2 kit zoom lenses thus avoiding duplication. This may be the reason why Pany has been quiet about the availablility of the 20/1.7 lens which should have logically already been available for the G1 and GH1 users?

I apologize for all the above speculation as opposed to facts, but sometimes some of the former does heighten our interests in the subject and keeps us looking to dpreview for anything we can find on the subject and then when the real thing arrives we look to dpreview for the information to make our decisions.

Just my two bits
