Why no EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS?

Exactly, yes.

In that case there would be little no no benefit to trade the 24-105L
for a 24-70L ?

f/2.8 is (still) one stop faster than f/4, regardless of the sensor.

To put it another way, imagine if you had a 15-44 f/1.7 (roughly) on a cropped body. That's what a 24-70 f/2.8 is like on FF.
