Switch from Nikon 16-85 to 24-70mm?
Mar 9, 2009

I love my 16-85mm as a general purpose carry around lens. The lens is sharp, with great colour and the VR certainly helps.

The only downside with the 16-85 is when shooting indoors or in lowlight, I do sometimes wish I had a faster lens, so that my I could freeze the target. This obviously happens only when I'm shooting people or moving objects, where VR isn't very effective, otherwise the 16-85 is as good as it gets.

Question is, do you use the 24-70 as a general purpose walk around lens on a DX body? How do you find the 900g weight? Do you miss VR, specially at the tele end? Even better, what are your thoughts if you have both the 16-85 and 24-70? Apart from the obvious loss of wide angle shooting capability, is it worth switching just to get the couple of extra stops?
