Hiking 27 miles in Grand Canyon this weekend, what to leave behind?
Feb 25, 2009

Hike down Kaibab 7 miles to Phantom Ranch on Friday, hike 11 miles to Ribbon Falls and back to Phantom Ranch on Saturday, hike 9 miles up Bright Angel on Sunday.

For a photography and grand canyon nut, on top of a full pack with tent, bag, pad, water, misc supplies, the debate begins, how much weight for camera equipment?

Nikon D700
MD10 Grip
A3 and A4 batteries
14-24 f2.8
24-70 f2.8
70-200 f2.8
Small Slik tripod
Filters (polarizer, grad density, vari-ND)
small video camera for the occasional shot of colorado river

I am a glutton for punishment, my equipment thoughts looks longer then some posts on what to take on an airplane to Europe.

The 14-24 is new to me, the wide angle could be powerful. The 24-70 is versatile. I'm thinking of leaving the heaviest of all, the 70-200 f2.8 behind. thoughts?
