Stylus 1040 or FE 5000?

My wife is looking for a small, slim camera and her BIL recommended Olympus FE-340. Looks like the newest version of that might be the FE-370?
I'm new to Olympus and don't understand the difference between FE and Stylus lines, especially between the new FE-5000 and Stylus 1040. Can anyone suggest how I should be comparing these cameras?
And if anyone could comment on how either might compare to a older Nikon Coolpix 950 (now broken), that would be most helpful.
