Nikon D3X - 'Is Nikon stepping towards Hybrid/Medium Format'
Jan 8, 2009

IMHO I believe that the Nikon D3X is the 'first step' by Nikon to move their development of digital SLR 'full frame' cameras into a 'head to head' with medium format systems.

Professional photographers are placing greater demands on digital technology and in particular in the arena of landscape and studio work. Their desire to increase image resolution, with greater tonal range and with the ability to shoot wider framing + cropping is very much there. Combine this with flexibility for useage in the open air, weather sealing, top end lenses and the removal of as much 'post processing' as possible (in particular HDR tweaking) and you can see that a collision course with medium format sensors is inevitable.

Nikon is no fool, it recognises that it has to maintain price (at least for the next few years) as it heads towards 'medium format' sensor levels and this is either the ongoing development of 35mm full frame sensors or moving towards the same development that Lecia (with its S2) has recognised.

Is it possible that Nikon's next step will be to develop it's own 35mm/Medium Format Sensor hybrid?

A great number of 'non' professional photographers will move to this technology as they aspire to 'gain a higher level of quality' in their images; whether this quality is utilised or not, it does not matter, it is the aspiration the drives it. They will pay the price to fulfil that aspiration - as one might purchase a Ferrari over a Porsche.

Cheers!
