Yet another thought, and re-setting the settings

If you have set long-exposure noise reduction, then you really have to wait a long time after you've taken a shot. As for re-setting things, I took a couple of photos of kids indoors at ISO 1600 and then went outside and tried to photograph birds with a long lens set at f/2.8 to maximize shutter speed. Needless to say, all I got was white; fortunately I noticed in time and re-set to ISO 100.

I normally leave high-ISO NR disabled; I don't think it's worth the loss of buffer capacity.
