Average Homepage "hits"

This could probably be posted in the Open Talk forum, but this is the forun I tend to read, so I'll post here.

I have a SmugMug page that I've had for a few months, and all the time I still feel that I'm building up the page, I haven't done much for people to notice it.

Even so, I had more than 3000 hits in december, which I found kind of (positively) surprising.

So my questions are:

How do they calculate "hits"? If I post a picture on a Forum thread, will it be counted as a hit every time someone opens and views the thread?

How many hits do people on this forum have on their Homepage during a month? My december 3300 hits was an all time high:-), and I have no idea wether this far below average or not.
