Strictly speaking you should post this query on the Canon D300-450 SLR forum.

On most if not all Canon compacts, the half-press of the shutter not only locks the focus, but also the exposure. In fact I use the half-press most of the time to fix the exposure, rather than the focus, mainly to curb blown highlights. On compacts the depth of field is sufficient that it is not really necesssary to pre-focus.

If you want to be particular about both the exposure and focus you need to use the exposure lock button.
