40D remote live view with Acer Aspire One

Has anyone found a workaround for the fact that Canon EOS utility software will not load on this machine due to insufficient native screen resolution of 1024 x 600 ?

Have heard screen res could be reset to 1024 x 768 by unchecking "display only viewable resolutions" but then desktop scrolls and maybe other problems. Anyone done it?
