automatic or manual external exposition for flash

With the 50D, you could use this feature with 580 or 430 exII, you can make an exposition , using a grey card.
What is purpose of this, because if it does like a white balance it doesn't seem to be stock somewhere ?
What this advantage of External exposition ?
