G lenses, aperture, and film
Jan 2, 2009

New D90 + 50mm 1.8D owner and had some questions about aperture:

1. Older lenses had a scale on the lens to show the approximate DoF (i.e., 12-24 feet). I'm really curious, why has this disappeared from newer lenses? Is this not relevant info?? Or if they're not going to put this info on the lens, why not at least show the exact DoF on one of the displays on the camera?

2. I'm trying to stick with primes/lenses that I could use on an old Nikon film camera (in case I want to pick one up for fun at some point). My question is, these new G lenses don't even have an aperture ring on the lens...is it safe to say these cannot be used at all on a film camera? Specifically, I've been looking at the 105 macro lens, and while I don't know if it's considered a G lens, it doesn't appear to have an aperture ring on it.

Thanks for your help
