Help me choose: Sigma 30mm 1.4 vs. Nikon 35mm 2.0 or.. ??
Dec 28, 2008

I've got a D90 w/ the kit 18-105mm f3.5 lens and am finding that since I shoot people, indoors at parties quite often, I certainly need a second lens which will be much faster. I'd love input on these two lenses, or get advice for something cheaper if possible. Here is what I know:

Sigma 30mm 1.4: ~$375. His gotten good reviews in these forums. Bokeh extra nice. Translates to about 45mm equiv on my D90 which is a good general purpose length. Cons? Lots of reports of product quality inconsistency. Possibly too little depth of field at 1.4 (I'll get just your nose in focus) so might be worth spending less and getting a sharper/better 1.8 or 2.0 lens?

Nikon 35mm f2.0: ~$300. A friend has this and loves it. At 52mm equiv, it translates well to what you see w/ your naked eye. At $75 cheaper, I could afford a 50mm 1.8 ($105) with the spare change.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW TO HELP ME CHOOSE:

1. I shoot in low light a lot at parties. That means focusing quickly and accurately is important.

2. I want flattering shots. I'm not expecting these to be as flattering as an 85mm+ portrait lens but since my kit lens isn't especially flattering at 18mm I assume these won't be stellar? Will I see a difference?

3. Weight/Size: My kit 18-105 is actually a bit of a drag. I'm looking forward to a lighter/smaller lens. Some wide angle lenses can be huge! (I don't think these are)

4. Price. Honestly, I'm er... between jobs right now. If there was a way to get 80% of this performance for 1/2 the price, please tell me. I'd be willing to give up a stop for example. I just know that my kit lens with f3.5 (even with VR) is NOT cutting it for indoor party photography. Oh for a economical 18-55mm f/2.0!

Thanks, now let those opinions fly!

Brandon
