I can confirmed the focusing problem it is both rather common and easy to fix. The simple solution is to Pre-Focus @50mm, then zoom out to 17mm. This is a sure-fired way to cure tamron focusing blue.

I agree with your friend that my "out of focus" shot were almost always @17mm, I have no problem with AF @50mm. Hence, the "pre-focus" @50mm then zoom out to 17mm solution. I hope that helps.
