Sigma 10-20 or Nikon 16-85VR

I'm a bit of a newbie, not totally green but with a lot to learn. I've discovered a love for landscape although I also need to make studio shots of my ceramics. At the moment I have a D60 with the kit 18-55 vr. Reading on this forum and in magazines I've been drawn to the Sig 10-20 and was just about to take the plunge when a friend suggested the Nik 16-85vr. Don't especially need the vr but I would welcome the 85 ability and I'm not to worried about the distortion at 16.....BUT... the Sigma seems to be well loved by those who have it and I get the impression that a lens this wide is a powerful tool for Landscape. (or should I try to learn with a 16 minimum/)
Can anyone offer pointers, pros/cons etc?
Thanks in advance
Kevin
