Overuse of the word *professional*
Dec 16, 2008

The fact that so many things come in a "professional" version has become a little bit of a pet peeve of mine. As I just now opened a new pack of gum (Wrigley's Extra, Professional), I suddenly felt the need to vent. Especially when there are also so many discussions here about what makes a camera a "professional" camera, or what makes a photographer a professional.

Some people take the view that simply getting paid for taking pictures, even just a few, makes you a professional photographer. I personally think that to be a professional at something, that something should be the primary way you make your money (as the root word "profession" implies).

Any other opinions?

(for the record, I am not a professional photographer - not even in the figurative sense)
