D90 w/ old AF Primes or 16-85?
Dec 15, 2008

So I'm buying my first DSLR (a D90, naturally), but I'm still debating what--if any--lens to go with it. I've narrowed it down to two scenarios: 1) just use my old AF prime lenses or 2) buy a 16-85. Kit lens is not an option given its poor build quality. I'd rather not spend $550 on a 16-85 if i don't have too though.

The primes I have left over from my N8008 film days are:

24mm f2.8 AF (non-D)
50mm f1.4 AF (non-D)
85mm f1.8 AF (non-D)

I also have a 70-210 zoom that has a rather large rock ding on the glass. This used to a leave a noticeable smudge on prints. Not sure what the results would be on digital or whether it is worth repairing (how much would that cost anyway?).

So the question is--should i just use the primes, or go for the 16-85? I just can't seem to make a decision. I know it may boil down to style, so let me just say that i don't think i'll be needing much on the long end, as I'll mostly be shooting landscapes or events. Any thoughts?
