Your examples have helped me with the perspective that I very much needed. I think for a person looking for flexibility and just getting started, I would need to get a zoom lens. However, I am considering two options now:

1. Get the 100-400mm and get the flexibility including bird pictures.

2. Getting a 55-250 for the flexibility and IS required for taking whale pictures in a rocking boat and a 400mm for bird pictures.

If I had unlimited monetary resources, I would go for both the 100-400mm for its versatility and 400mm for when I am specifically going out for bird pictures.
