Comparison 5D mk2, D700, A900 and 1Ds mk3
Dec 8, 2008

Since the 5D mk2 RAW files were posted here http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E5D2/E5D2A7.HTM , I downloaded these and RAW files from the 1Ds mk3, Nikon D700 and Sony A900. Since 5D mk2 is not yet supported in Lightroom (which I use), I downloaded the Adobe DNG converter and conterted the 5D mk2 RAW files to DNG and imported these and the RAW files from the other cameras in Lightroom. I selected a crop of the image, used the defaults in Lightroom and exported the images in the same output resolution such that the D700 is 1:1 pixel view and the others downsampled to the same resolution. Output sharpening was set to standard.

The result is that the D700 still has the lowest noise, but there is a rather visible difference in the amount of details visible. I have not (yet) tried to use noise reduction to the point where the visual resolution of the 5D mk2 equals the D700 and then view the resulting noise levels. It is also clear that the 5D mk2 has reduced noise compared to the 1Ds mk3 and apparently without loosing details.

The comparison can be seen here
